Devil’s Margarita: Blanco Tequila & Red Wine Fusion

This daring twist on the classic Mexican Margarita marries bright blanco tequila and freshly squeezed lime with a whisper of simple syrup, then crowns the creation with a dark red wine float. Originating as a playful riff on the mid-20th-century Margarita, the Devil’s Margarita balances the sharp citrus backbone and silky agave spirit against the wine’s tannic depth. Each sip begins with zingy lime and smooth tequila, then surprises you as the red wine layers in, adding fruit-driven complexity and a devilish finish. Perfect for adventurous cocktail lovers, this drink shines at summer soirées, dinner parties or any occasion that calls for a dramatic, two-tiered presentation. The result is equal parts elegant and mischievous—an unforgettable sensory experience that turns tradition on its head.

Directions

Chill Glass

  • 1. Place a cocktail glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the drink.

Shake Ingredients

  • 2. In a shaker, combine tequila, lime juice (30 ml) and simple syrup (22 ml). Add ice and shake vigorously until well chilled, about 10 seconds.

Strain

  • 3. Dump ice or water from your chilled glass and strain the mixture into it.

Float Red Wine

Cookix's Secrets

Berry Diablo

  • Use a fruit-forward red like Grenache or Shiraz, or substitute wine with chilled pomegranate juice.

Frozen Twist

  • Blend all ingredients (except wine) with 1 cup (240 ml) of ice, then float the wine on top in the glass.

Glassware

  • Use a well-chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass to keep the drink cold longer without top-up dilution.

Lime Juice

  • Roll limes firmly before juicing to maximize yield and reduce pulp.

Shaking Technique

  • Shake with a firm wrist motion and a tight seal to achieve quick chilling without over-diluting.

Simple Syrup

  • Make extra and store in the fridge; for a richer mouthfeel, use a 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio.

Smoky Devil

  • Swap blanco tequila for mezcal to introduce smoky, earthy notes.

Spicy Inferno

  • Add a thin slice of fresh jalapeño to the shaker for a subtle heat underlayer.

Virgin Devil

  • Replace tequila with seed-to-shell non-alcoholic spirit and the wine with chilled black cherry juice.

Wine Float

  • Chill the red wine as cold as possible to help it layer more distinctly over the cocktail.
