Directions

Caramelize the Onions

  • 1. In a large skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and season with salt and pepper. Sauté for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and soft. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Cook the Steak

  • 2. In the same skillet, melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced steak and season with additional salt and pepper. Cook over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently, until the steak is cooked through and nicely seared. Incorporate the caramelized onions back into the skillet and cook off any excess liquid.

Prepare the Rolls

  • 3. Slice the hoagie rolls in half. In a small bowl, mix the crushed garlic with 1 tablespoon of butter. Spread the garlic butter generously on the inside of the rolls. Toast the rolls in the skillet, cut side down, until golden brown.

Assemble the Sandwiches

  • 4. Layer the steak and onion mixture onto the toasted rolls and place slices of cheese on top. Cover the skillet with a lid and reduce the heat to low, allowing the steam to melt the cheese. Once melted, serve the sandwiches warm.
Cookix's Secrets

Cheese Options

  • Experiment with different cheese varieties such as Cheez Whiz for an authentic twist.

Healthier Options

  • Use whole grain rolls and reduce the amount of butter for a lighter version.

Onion Caramelization

  • Be patient while caramelizing the onions; a low and slow approach enhances their sweetness.

Spice it Up

  • Add sliced jalapeños or a dash of hot sauce for an extra kick.

Steak Selection

  • For the best flavor, choose well-marbled steak like ribeye if skirt steak is unavailable.

Vegetarian Twist

  • Replace the steak with sautéed mushrooms or a plant-based meat alternative.
